Model Making Day – Summer Fields School

The Oxford and District Model Railway Club was asked by Summer Fields School, Oxford, to provide a modelling day for their boarding school pupils. A group of members were assembled to help the boys build a simple kit, which they could take away at the end of the session.

A Revell Star Wars Imperial Cruiser was chosen, which was easy to put together, came with a stand for display, and by using simple techniques, could be made in the time available, and to show that model railway techniques can be turned to other genres.

First, the team were on hand to help the pupils interpret the instructions, cut the plastic kit from its sprues, and glue the model together. The kit was then sprayed and set aside for the afternoon session.

To detail the model, a weathering wash was applied to give the imperial cruiser a worn appearance.

It was great to be able to bring model making to a younger audience, for some of whom this was their first model kit, and really pleasing to see the pupils proudly taking away their newly created masterpieces.
