Much Wittering

Much Wittering is a layout currently being assembled by the Oxford and District Model Railway club. Three baseboards were gifted to the club, and a lot of discussion was held about their best use. It was decided that a new 4mm layout should be constructed.

The track plan is not too dissimilar to Hemyock, a terminus station in the West Country. Whilst Hemyock is a beautiful example of a bucolic branchline terminus, many examples already exists. Instead, the track plan has been adapted to meet the wider modelling desires of the team.

The track plan has been designed in Anyrail, the information adapted in Templot, and this has been printed out full size to allow the track laying to hopefully start soon.

The track is to be on a raised section, with a canal scene at the front of the layout. The topography is to be cut from polystyrene. Track has been mounted on cork, ready to be shaped to form a ballast shoulder.

Many members are keen to find out more about hand laying trackwork, and Much Wittering is being used as an opportunity for members to learn this skill.

Track has now been laid and ballasted, allowing weathering of the track to start. The inlaid track forming the area in front of the factory has been formed out of plasticard.

Buildings have also commenced. The first to be created is the engine shed, designed by one of our club members and cut on the clubs laser cutter. It was then assembled by one of the team members.

Other buildings such as the goods shed and a lineside hut are under construction, with the station building hopefully coming off the laser cutter soon!

Grass has now been laid, which uses a mixture of hanging basket liner, with static grass over to give a sense of vegetation.

Further trees and bushes are to be added, plus water for the stream to be laid soon.

More progress will be posted as the layouts construction develops.
